Artist's Statement

As a sculptor, I release color into space. I unleash its power to travel into the third dimension where it can enter a kaleidoscopic, unfettered realm. It is a realm where colors can change, perception is deceived, and light intertwines. My work has led me into microspace, a frontier in science as well as art which abounds with potential.

I begin construction of my low relief wall sculptures by painting canvas and mesh. Mesh opens into microspace, and it is here the metamorphosis of color begins. As I assemble layers, I manipulate moiré patterns and optical effects. My eye is drawn into the mesh with its changing colors and moving patterns, and I balance this with brushed aluminum sheet metal, a place for the eye to rest. Donald Judd and the minimalists introduced me to the beauty inherent in materials, while Color Field artists such as Barnett Newman and Mark Rothko showed me the power of color. I balance opposing forces, the independent movement of color, and the stillness of impenetrable metal to foster harmony. In life, we are surrounded by opposing forces that call to be tempered.
