Layers

What do they represent.

Superficially, and yet importantly, a spectacle of color. I love the way light is absorbed and also reflected from the work. The mesh pulls the light in, the metal deflects it. Two opposing forces. As the mesh draws light between the strands, a bit of scientifically explained magic takes place, the light seems to emanate from the canvas. Are the opposing forces yin and yang? Are they symbolic of right brain versus left. Are they representative of the light we emanate while living, the light we emanate after. Do we reflect light or absorb and emanate light as we stand living upon this spot right now.

Are we talking about the layers of who we are, constructed from eons of ancestors from whom we have inherited powerful automatic emotional responses living in a world that has changed. Our fears have changed, a lion may no longer be bearing down upon us, but that man in the 3-piece suit might pose a problem. Layers. Layers of being, of wonder, of curiosity, of searching, of an attempt to understand. Who am I who has this brain that is immensely powerful. Ten to the fifteenth power synapses making connections, moving my hand, driving my thoughts and my actions at the speed of ten to the sixteenth power synapse operations per second. And yet as powerful as the brain is I will never know all the answers, nor even enough of the questions, but I will delight in the scent of a rose, and the splendor of a sunset and also at the play of light upon my work, reflecting, descending and refracting and illuminating and driving me to marvel at this extraordinary gift of life in a wondrous universe.
